In counseling work, one of the most common things we see is how “limiting beliefs” can affect people’s lives.
Limiting beliefs like….
I am not good enough
I can’t trust anyone
Bad things will happen to me
I am not worthy of love
People will leave me in the end
I can’t be who I am
People don’t accept me for me
I am bad
Failure is bad
And the list goes on….
Limiting beliefs can be unconscious, subconscious or insidious, and may impact a person’s life in multiple domains without the person even realizing it. It stems from our personality, our childhood, our past experiences and our unresolved traumas.
Limiting beliefs are like your handbrakes/parking gear in your car. You may know where you want to go. You may be a great driver even. You may have a V8 engine. But if your handbrakes and parking gear is on, you may not go far.
I wonder if you can relate or see this in your patients everyday?
