In ACT or Acceptance Commitment Therapy, it can be very hard for patients to appreciate what defusion from thoughts of feelings actually is.
Without defusion, our perception of the world and self can become very rigid and inflexible.
One simple way to view it is this.
Defusion is about creating distance/space from thoughts and feelings but those thoughts and feelings are still very much in focus.
Dissociation is about creating distance/space from thoughts and feelings but those thoughts and feelings are out of focus.
Fusion is about not having much distance/space at all from thoughts and feelings. We are “fused”.
I wonder if you can relate.
