Helping to balance the need for self versus the need of others

In counseling, we often see a lot of struggle from folks who are “self sacrificers”. This is especially true for our own profession too.

Healthcare is a “giving profession” and so it’s natural to see more “self sacrificers” in our industry. It’s wonderful to give but selfcare is absolute critical for one to enjoy “giving”. We can’t give what we don’t have.

So make sure that we are well biopsychosocially, and then coach our patients to do the same. If one add value to self and others, the financial and non financial returns will come and most importantly, sustainable. We won’t be hungry.

It’s a difficult balance to fine tune the need for self versus others, but it’s a learnable skill.

It starts with awareness.
