In counseling, we can help our patients create space or make room for their feelings and the feelings of others

In a counseling session today, I had to help one of our patients observe and notice a “feeling” without the urge to act. It’s not easy of course.

If one is able to sense a “vibe or feeling” of others, and can “create the space” to allow it to be or process that in a healthy way, it may help guide thoughtful actions. Without that “space” to process that feeling, impulsive actions may lead to unnecessary drama.

If one is able to sense our own internal “vibe or feeling”, and can “create the space” to allow it to be or process that in a healthy way, it may help guide thoughtful actions. Without that “space” to process that feeling, impulsive actions may lead to unnecessary drama.

So, what’s the point?

To lessen unhealthy drama, one must consider learning how to “create space” or “making room” for our own feelings and the feelings of others, so that we can process that more effectively before taking action.
