I often see folks with strong values around care, compassion and kindness.
The trouble is, the rules that they tend to create from those values is that care, compassion and kindness for others is good.
But care, compassion and kindness for self is bad and selfish.
Values are like your tools.
It’s important to know your tools, the nuances associated with those tools, and use it well. If not, it can backfire in significant ways, especially when we apply unworkable rules to our values.
So how can we move forward?
We will have to change the rules but still honor those values to “Both compassion for others and self are important”.
